Bl. Kuriakose Elias Chavara
Blessed Kuriakose Elias Chavara born on 10th Feb. 1805 of God fearing parents (Kuriakose) Chavara and Mariam of the Syro-Malabar Church, Kainakary, near Allappuzha, Kerala. to the local custom infant was baptized on 8th day in Chennankari Church, Alappuzha.
From the age 5- 10, he attended the school (Kalari) to study, different dialects, and elementary under the guidance of Hindu teacher (Asan). Inspired the desire to become priest, he began the under the parish priest the church of St. at the age of 13 in 1818 he entered seminary at Pallipuram where Thomas Palackal was the . He was ordained priest 29th November, 1829 at and celebrated his First Mass at Chennankari Church.
After the ordination he engaged for some time pastoral ministry; however he returned to the seminary teach and also to for the Malpan Thomas during his absence. Thus joined Malpan Thomas Porukara Malpan Thomas Palackal when were planning to found congregation. In 1830 he to Mannanam to direct construction of the first of the congregation of the foundation stone was on 11th May, 1831. the death of both Malpans, Blessed Chavara took leadership. On 8th December, 1855 he made the religious along with other 10 , under the name "Kuriakose of Holy Family".
